A little backstory here.
Dogfish Head says this is an “Ancient Beer” based on chemical analysis of pottery fragments found in Honduras that revealed the earliest known alcoholic chocolate drink used by early civilizations to toast special occasions. Theobroma is translated into “food of the gods” and is brewed with Aztec cocoa powder and cocoa nibs, honey, chilies and annatto.
So, this beer recipe is ancient. However, it’s flavor, profile, and appearance is anything but ancient. It’s new, unlike anything else I’ve ever had, and glorious. You can taste the chocolate and honey right off the top and the finish, the finish is really unlike anything I’ve had. It’s a gentle heat that tingles your lips and tongue. It’s an amazing sensation that I absolutely love. This is one of the best beers I’ve had and one of the best that Dogfish Head has ever produced. I’m so happy that Dogfish Head is back in Michigan. Cause this is a beer I want to have over and over again.
