Beer #149 – Victory Prima Pils

This is one of the better German Pilseners I’ve every had. It’s delicious, light, and springy. It has a perfect amount of bitterness combined with a crispness that is so refreshing. I can drink this beer at any time and it will forever be in my beer rotation. Victory is producing some of the best beers in the country.

Beer #148 – Shock Top Wheat IPA

Just terrible.

This beer doesn’t taste like a wheat ale.

Nor does this beer taste like an IPA.

Frankly, this beer doesn’t taste like anything. What a complete disappointment on every level. The hops just don’t hop. The wheat is just too pale. I really don’t understand this beer and how Shock Top can sell it claiming that it’s a Wheat IPA. It’s just plain irresponsible. Don’t ever buy this. It’s a worthless beer.

Beer #147 – Affigem Blond

This is very, very Belgium. A bit skunky (in a good way) and crisp with the very touch of hops. It’s a Belgium beer through and through. I did thoroughly enjoy it and find it one of the better European beers that I’ve ever had. I don’t have much more to say about it other then it’s very good and worth your time for sure.

Beer #146 – Crazy Train Black IPA

I had this on tap at a local bar and really enjoyed it. It’s a black IPA with full hop flavor and maltiness that is delicious. I was very pleasantly surprised by this. It was delicious on tap and hopefully someday I’ll find it in a bottle soon and get to enjoy it that way.

Beer #145 – Dogfish Head Theobroma

A little backstory here.

Dogfish Head says this is an “Ancient Beer” based on chemical analysis of pottery fragments found in Honduras that revealed the earliest known alcoholic chocolate drink used by early civilizations to toast special occasions. Theobroma is translated into “food of the gods”  and is brewed with Aztec cocoa powder and cocoa nibs, honey, chilies and annatto.

So, this beer recipe is ancient. However, it’s flavor, profile, and appearance is anything but ancient. It’s new, unlike anything else I’ve ever had, and glorious. You can taste the chocolate and honey right off the top and the finish, the finish is really unlike anything I’ve had. It’s a gentle heat that tingles your lips and tongue. It’s an amazing sensation that I absolutely love. This is one of the best beers I’ve had and one of the best that Dogfish Head has ever produced. I’m so happy that Dogfish Head is back in Michigan. Cause this is a beer I want to have over and over again.

Beer #144 – Top Secret American IPA

Today was national IPA day. So, I decided to have an IPA from a Michigan brewery I’ve never experienced before, Michigan Beer Cellar. I think the seal was broken at some point. Cause when I poured it, there was hardly any head in the glass. Not that this was that much of a problem. There was still plenty of carbonation left over to give it enough fizz throughout the drink. The drink was decent too. Enough hops and enough of a unique flavor to make you want another. It’s not spectacular, but a decent entry into the American IPA scene.

Beer #143 – Atwater Grand Circus IPA

I wasn’t expecting much from this beer. I got a six pack of it via a fire sale at a local beer store. However, I was pleasantly surprise by this beer. Now, it’s not the best IPA I’ve ever had. But it’s not the worst. It has enough of a bitter bite to remind you that you’re drinking an IPA. It comes in a can, which is a nice touch. Cause for 4.99 a six pack, I can easily stuff a cooler with cans of this beer. And that’s not a bad feeling at all.

Beer #142 – Big Sky Heavy Horse

This beer left me speechless. I really don’t know what to say. It’s just a perfect blend of flavor and alcohol. This is by far the best Scotch Ale I’ve ever experienced. It’s mellow and mild in all the right spots. And it kicks you right were you want a beer to kick you. It’s just simply a finely crafted, amazing beer. Please buy this. Give Big Sky Brewing your money. Them, and you, will be very, very happy.

Beer #141 – North Peak Majestic Wheat Ale

I was very underwhelmed by this. It just didn’t pop for me. Perhaps it’s because it’s a straight up wheat beer, which are not my most favorite. However, this beer is made by North Peak, which is one of my favorite breweries out there. So, I’ll give North Peak the benefit of the doubt. They make so many great beers that it’s okay if they kinda fail every once in a great while.

Beer #140 – Bell’s 25th Anniversary Ale

This is a pretty unique drink. It’s very malty and very hoppy, all at the same time. It’s pretty magical I think. I really can’t remember having a beer that mixes hops and malt equally, at such high levels, so well. You should try to find this. It’s totally worth your time and effort.
